Where can I mount the indoor head under a sloped ceiling or on a knee wall?
Clearance decides this before the model does. MRCOOL’s general installation guidance calls for at least 6 inches of clearance above a wall-mounted indoor head and on each side. The bottom of the unit should sit at least 7 feet above the floor[3].
- A knee wall short enough to lose that clearance is not a mounting point, whatever its square footage looks like on paper.
- The high side of a sloped ceiling, or a gable-end wall, usually has the room a low knee wall does not.
- This is general manufacturer guidance, not one model’s exact spec. Confirm the installation manual for the specific unit before cutting any wall opening.
How far can the line set run down the exterior to the outdoor condenser?
An upstairs or attic install routes the line set down, not up. Every manufacturer caps how far it can run before oil stops returning reliably to the compressor. A basement install checks the same limit in the other direction.

A second-story or attic run rarely approaches any of these limits on its own[4][5][6]. A long horizontal run to reach a specific corner of the house is more likely to matter than the vertical drop.
Does an upstairs or attic install need a condensate pump?

When a pump enters the picture

Can I DIY an attic or upstairs mini split myself?
Only on the models that skip the vacuum pump. Height in the house does not change that check.
Where DIY ends: refrigerant

Sanity check your attic or upstairs setup
Work these four checks in order before buying equipment.
- Run the room’s real ceiling height through the sizing calculator. A vaulted or sloped ceiling adds real air volume; do not size from a flat 8-foot assumption.
- Confirm the attic’s insulation level, or the level behind a finished knee wall, before assuming the room’s own square footage tells the whole story.
- Check clearance before choosing a mounting wall. A knee wall too short to clear roughly 6 inches on top and each side, with 7 feet to the floor, is not a mounting point.
- Confirm the drain path. Most upstairs rooms gravity-drain; an interior placement far from an exterior wall is the exception that needs a pump.
