- Neither one is the generic case. “Heat pump” names the mechanism. “Ductless” and “ducted” name how that mechanism reaches the room, and that is the actual decision in front of most buyers.
Ductless vs ducted heat pump: what actually differs?
Ductwork is the hinge everything else swings on. ENERGY STAR’s own comparison puts it plainly: a ducted system “can use pre-existing ductwork … making installation even easier,” while a home “without existing ductwork” or mid-renovation gets a mini split instead[1]. Five things follow from that one fact.
- Install disruption. A ducted heat pump can be a same-day, drop-in swap when good ductwork already exists. Adding ductwork where none exists is a construction project, walls, ceilings, chases, that a ductless retrofit skips entirely with its one wall penetration.
- Zoning. A mini split is zoned by definition: one indoor head, one room, one thermostat. A multi-zone system adds heads the same way. A ducted system typically runs one zone per system unless a contractor adds dampers and zone controls as a separate line item.
- Efficiency at part load. A single-zone ductless system is almost always inverter-driven, so it throttles down to match one room instead of cycling fully on and off. Which one fits my house: ductless or ducted?
Work these four checks in order before shopping for either one.
- Check whether usable ductwork already exists. Good ducts push the decision toward a ducted heat pump swap. No ducts, or ducts that do not reach the room in question, push it toward ductless.
- Count the rooms that actually need conditioning. One room or an addition favors a single-zone mini split. A whole house already on ducts favors staying ducted.
