    A mini split is a heat pump in two parts. An indoor head hangs on your wall. An outdoor unit sits on a pad outside. A refrigerant line set joins them through one hole in the wall, and there are no ducts. One system both heats and cools the room it is in.     What is a ductless mini split system made of?

    A ductless mini-split system is three physical parts: an indoor unit, an outdoor unit, and the line set between them. The MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen 18k ships as one wall-mounted indoor head, one outdoor condenser, and a 25 ft pre-charged line set[1]. “What is a mini split” has a short answer: it is that kit, installed on one wall.

    Each part has one job.

    • Indoor head. The unit on the wall. It holds a coil, a fan, and a filter. It blows conditioned air into the room and drains condensate out through a small tube.
    • Outdoor unit. The box on the pad. It holds the compressor, a larger coil, and a fan. It dumps heat to the outside air in summer and pulls heat from it in winter.
    • Line set. Two insulated copper lines that carry refrigerant between the units, plus a control wire and the condensate drain bundled alongside.

    The wall penetration is the only structural change. The whole bundle passes through a single hole, usually hidden in a plastic line-hide channel on the outside wall. Compared with a central system, that is the entire installation footprint. No attic, no duct runs, no plenum.

    How does a mini split work?

    A mini-split heat pump works by moving heat, not by making it. The outdoor unit’s compressor pumps refrigerant around a loop between the two coils. Heat leaves the room through the indoor coil in summer and enters the room through it in winter.

    The U.S. Department of Energy lists ductless mini-splits among the heat pump types that can be an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners in moderate climates[2].

    Here is the loop in plain terms:

    1. Refrigerant absorbs heat at one coil and turns to vapor.
    2. The compressor squeezes that vapor, which raises its temperature.
    3. The hot vapor gives up its heat at the other coil and condenses back to liquid.
    4. An expansion valve drops the pressure, the liquid gets cold, and the cycle repeats.

    A reversing valve in the outdoor unit decides which coil does which job. In cooling mode the indoor coil absorbs heat. In heating mode the valve flips the flow, and the indoor coil releases heat. That is why one unit covers both seasons, while a window air conditioner runs the same loop but can only run it in one direction.

    What is a mini split heating and cooling system rated to do?

    A mini-split heating and cooling system carries two capacity ratings, one per mode, and both are measured at mild outdoor temperatures. The Senville LETO 12k is rated 12,000 BTU/h of cooling and 12,000 BTU/h of heating[3]. Its cold-climate directory listing shows a maximum of 6,600 BTU/h at 5°F[4]. Rated heating is measured at 47°F, so the nameplate is not the winter number.

    Rated figures come from each model’s manufacturer documentation; the 5°F figures come from each model’s NEEP cold-climate list entry[4]. Three ratings matter when you shop.

    • BTU/h is capacity. It tells you how much heat the unit can move in an hour. Match it to a load calculation, not to a square-footage chart.
    • SEER2 and HSPF2 are efficiency. SEER2 covers cooling, HSPF2 covers heating. Higher means less electricity per unit of comfort.

    Why is it called a mini split?

    It is called a mini split because it is a split system, scaled down. A conventional central air conditioner is also “split”: the compressor and condenser coil live outside, the evaporator coil lives inside on the furnace, and refrigerant lines connect them. A mini split keeps that split layout but shrinks the indoor side to a single room-sized head with no ductwork. “Ductless” and “mini split” describe the same product from two angles: one names what it lacks, the other names its lineage.

    The “mini” is about the indoor unit and the air handling, not about capacity.

    • Single-zone wall heads run from about 9,000 to 36,000 BTU/h.
    • The MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen line, for example, spans 12,000 to 36,000 BTU/h in one product family[1].

    A 36k unit is not small. It just has no ducts.

    Inverter compressor vs on/off: what actually changes

    An inverter compressor runs at variable speed, and that one feature drives most of a mini split’s efficiency advantage. A fixed-speed compressor is either at 100% or off: it hits the setpoint, shuts down, lets the room drift, and starts again. An inverter-driven compressor slows down instead of stopping. It idles along at part speed for hours, holding the room within a fraction of a degree.

    Three things follow from that.

    • Lower bills. Part-speed running is where the high SEER2 numbers come from. Starting a compressor is the expensive moment; an inverter avoids most of them.
    • Better humidity control in summer. Long, slow cycles keep air moving across a cold coil, which wrings out more moisture than short blasts do.
    • Quieter operation. A compressor turning slowly makes less noise than one cycling hard. The Zone Air 12k lists 52 dB(A) outdoors at its rated point[5].

    Nearly every mini-split heat pump sold today is inverter-driven. The spec sheet will say “DC inverter” or “variable-speed.” Treat an on/off unit as the exception, and ask why it is cheaper.

    Ductless vs central: which one are you actually shopping for?

    A ductless mini split conditions one room per indoor head, while a central system conditions the whole house through ducts from one air handler. That difference decides the decision more than brand does. ENERGY STAR’s guidance for homes without ductwork points straight at mini splits, while its air-source heat pump guidance covers ducted homes[6].

    Use the split below as a first screen.

    • A mini split fits when you are conditioning one space: a garage, a sunroom, an addition, a bonus room over the garage, or one room that the central system never reaches.
    • A multi-zone mini split puts two to five heads on one outdoor unit. It fits a whole-home retrofit in a house with no ducts, but each head is its own zone with its own cost.
    • Central stays the answer when the house already has good ducts and the question is only replacing the equipment at the end of them.

    What size do you need, and can you install it yourself?

    Two questions decide the purchase, and the answer to both lives elsewhere on this site. Size comes from the room’s heat load: insulation, ceiling height, climate zone, and sun exposure move it more than square footage does[7].     Install path is the other half, a fact about the unit rather than about you, and we sort every unit into one of three tiers.

    • True-DIY. Quick-connect line sets that mate without flaring or a vacuum pump. MRCOOL DIY and Zone Air are the current examples.
    • Vacuum-required. Flare fittings that need a vacuum pump and a micron gauge, whatever the listing says about “pre-charged.” Senville, Pioneer, and Cooper & Hunter sit here.
    • Pro-install-only. Brands whose warranty requires a licensed HVAC contractor. Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and Daikin.

    Is a mini split an air conditioner or a heater?

Cooling-only mini splits exist but are the minority. Check that the spec sheet lists a heating capacity and an HSPF2 rating; the Senville LETO 12k lists HSPF2 8.7[3].

    Will it keep up when it’s 0°F outside?

    Only a cold-climate model will. Rated heating is measured at 47°F, and a standard unit can fall to about half its nameplate at 5°F: the Senville LETO 12k is rated 12,000 BTU/h but publishes 6,600 BTU/h at 5°F[4]. Cold-climate tiers like Senville Aura hold far more. Buy on the capacity-at-temperature number, never the nameplate.

    Do I need an electrician / can my panel handle it?

    Size class decides the circuit. The MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen 12k runs on 115V with a 20A maximum breaker, while the 18k in the same line needs a 208/230V circuit with a 20A maximum breaker[1]. Adding a 240V circuit is panel work, and panel work belongs with a licensed electrician. Permits belong with your local building department.

    Is it actually pre-charged or do I still need a vacuum pump?

    “Pre-charged” only means the refrigerant ships inside the unit. Only true quick-connect systems skip the vacuum pump: MRCOOL DIY and Zone Air ship sealed line sets that mate without evacuation[1]. Senville and Pioneer systems are pre-charged in the same sense but connect with flare fittings, so their installs still need a vacuum pump and a micron gauge.

    What size do I need for my garage?

    A 2-car garage runs 400 to 500 ft², and insulation sets its number. At 450 ft² in climate zone 5, our screening estimate is 17,000 BTU/h of heat needed at 5°F with poor insulation and 13,000 BTU/h with average insulation. That is a load, not a unit size: compare it to a model’s verified capacity at 5°F (NEEP), not to the number on the box.
