Mini split vs central air: it depends on your ducts

- Existing central system, one hot or cold room. Add a single-zone mini split to that room and leave the central system alone. This is the highest-value case in the category. The central system keeps doing the job it is already sized for.
- No ducts, whole house. Multi-zone mini splits, or a ducted system built from scratch. Price both before assuming ducts are the cheaper path. Every zone is its own line item either way.
- Old central system, good ducts. Replace the equipment at the end of the existing ducts. A house full of wall heads is not an upgrade here. It is a step backward.
What does each system cost, installed?
A single-zone mini split installs for less than a whole-house central system. The gap is the ductwork and the equipment scale, not a manufacturer markup. Two dated cost guides put single-zone mini-split installation between $500 and $6,000. The same two guides put whole-house central air between $5,000 and just over $20,000, and they disagree by thousands of dollars at the top of that range.

Duct losses are the hidden cost on the central side
Central air spends part of every cooling or heating cycle paying a tax a mini split never sees. ENERGY STAR states that a typical home loses about 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through its duct system to leaks, holes, and poorly connected joints[1]. A mini split delivers its air at the wall, a few feet from where the compressor made it. It has no duct run to lose that air through.
Sealing or replacing bad ducts closes most of the gap on the central side. That work is its own line item, priced separately from the equipment.
Efficiency: SEER2 side by side
A mini split’s inverter compressor and a central system’s efficiency floor are not the same number. The gap is bigger than most buyers expect.

Will a mini split keep up when it’s cold?
A standard-tier mini split loses real heating capacity in the cold, the same way a central heat pump does. The published number is what to check, not the nameplate. The Senville Aura 12k is rated 12,000 BTU/h at 47°F. Its own NEEP listing shows a maximum of 11,500 BTU/h at 5°F and 5,900 BTU/h at −22°F[8].
A cold-climate model’s capacity has to meet or exceed your room’s own heating load at your coldest design temperature. The milder number on the box is not the one that matters.
Where DIY ends: refrigerant and 240V
Both systems put refrigerant work and, on most classes, a 240V circuit between a buyer and a finished install. A true-DIY mini split skips the vacuum pump on the refrigerant side. A central system’s outdoor condenser does not, and neither does any vacuum-required mini-split brand. Either way, a licensed HVAC technician handles refrigerant, and a licensed electrician handles the circuit.
Appearance and resale: the wall unit vs the invisible system
A mini split puts a visible indoor head on the wall in every room it serves. Central air disappears into a vent and a thermostat. Some buyers and some appraisers in ducted-house markets read a wall head as a patch rather than an upgrade, not a feature they paid for. That perception is real even where the mini split is doing a better job on the electric bill.
In a garage, a sunroom, or a house with no ducts to begin with, that reading flips. A wall head reads as the obvious right answer there, and a retrofit duct run reads as the patch instead.
