    What does “1.5 ton” mean on a mini split?

    A ton is a rate of cooling rather than a weight, a term that comes from the amount of heat a ton of ice absorbs as it melts over a day, and the industry fixed it at 12,000 BTU per hour, so a 1.5 ton mini-split heat pump is rated to move 18,000 BTU of heat per hour[1]; mini splits are usually sold by the BTU figure rather than the ton, which means “1.5 ton,” “18k,” and “18,000 BTU” are the same size class under three different names. That rating is taken at one set of test conditions, and the heating figure is taken at 47°F outside. The MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen 18k, for example, lists 18,000 BTU of cooling and 18,000 BTU of heating on its product page.[3] Real output moves with the weather, which is why the nameplate is the start of sizing and not the end of it.

    What room does a 1.5 ton mini split cover?

    It depends who you ask, and the spread is the useful part.

    • ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner table, which assumes an 8-foot ceiling, lists 18,000 BTU/h for a room of 700 up to 1,000 square feet.[2]
    • MRCOOL’s own page for its 18k unit says it suits spaces from 500 to 700 square feet.[3]
    • Zone Air’s page for its 18k says up to 900 square feet.[4]

    Those are three honest sources giving three different answers, and the gap between them is information rather than an error.

    The spread exists because square footage is only one input. ENERGY STAR’s own table tells you to adjust it:

    • Sun and shade. Reduce the capacity by 10 percent if the room is heavily shaded, and add 10 percent if it is very sunny.[2]
    • People. Add 600 BTU for each person beyond two who regularly occupies the room.[2]
    • Kitchens. Add 4,000 BTU if the unit serves a kitchen.[2]
    • Ceiling height. The table assumes 8 feet. A 10-foot garage or a vaulted great room holds more air and more heat than its floor area suggests.[2]

    Then add what no cooling table covers: insulation quality, how leaky the room is, your climate zone, and the design temperature you are heating against. A 700 sq ft insulated bedroom suite in Atlanta and a 700 sq ft uninsulated garage in Minneapolis both land on “18k” in a chart and have nothing else in common.     Oversizing is a real cost rather than a safety margin, because an inverter unit can turn down only so far, and a 1.5 ton head in a room that needs half of it runs at its minimum speed, short cycles, and leaves the air clammy in summer.

    Will a 1.5 ton mini split heat the same room it cools?

    Not in the cold, because heating capacity falls as the outdoor air cools, and the drop is larger than most buyers expect.

    Efficiency falls on the same slope as capacity, so the coldest hours are both the weakest and the most expensive ones.

    So a 1.5 ton unit that is a comfortable cooling fit for a room may be an undersized heater for the same room in a cold climate, which is why the 5°F figure, or the maker’s figure at your design temperature, has to be matched against the room’s heat loss before the purchase.     What does a 1.5 ton mini split need from the panel?

    Where DIY ends: the 240V circuit

    The 18k class runs on 208/230V. Adding that circuit means a new breaker in the panel, correctly sized wire, and a disconnect at the outdoor unit, and the in-panel work is where DIY ends for most people. A licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire to the unit’s nameplate, confirms the panel has the capacity, and pulls the permit your local building department requires.

    The two brands that are true no-vacuum DIY at this size are MRCOOL DIY and Zone Air, whose quick-connect line sets mate without flaring or a vacuum pump. Every other “pre-charged” 18k listing still needs its line set flared and evacuated by someone with the tools. Both true-DIY units still want a dedicated 240V circuit.

    • The MRCOOL 18k lists a maximum breaker of 20A and a minimum circuit ampacity of 18A, with a 25 ft line set in the box and a 98.4 ft maximum.[3]

    Often, but a garage is the room where square-foot rules fail worst: uninsulated doors, a slab floor, and a tall ceiling all add load the chart never sees.
